Hopefully as I’ve grown older I’ve also grown wiser, but one thing I’ve definitely become cognizant of is the difference between making a living and making a life. Frequently outraged by some of life’s cruelties, and respect diversity. But…..I don’t suffer fools gladly, and occasionally, this does get me into some trouble!

I have the distinction of being the world’s worst golfer – no wait, I do believe that there is a gypsy in Moldavia who is a worse golfer than I. Nor am I much of a dancer – you won’t see a booty-shakin’ flygirl routine from me! I’m also not the kind of cook who can whip up a five-course meal on a radiator either! And I’ve never figured out how to get an orchid to bloom a second time.

I love to discuss literature, science, philosophy, and sci-fi , or even why Seinfeld is funny on so many levels. Words move me. I’m very soft-hearted about most things, especially animals, but I have a stoicism about me that is sometimes interpreted incorrectly. I do have a definite edge and an often “retro-adolescent” sense of humour at times. I’m a big advocate of distributed computing projects to advance science. Check out http://boinc.berkeley.edu/ if you want to find out more.

I’m an eclectic plant-based eater, and as such, it’s a personal practice of mine to seduce innocent meat-eaters into cruising the (salad) bars at every opportunity. You would be powerless to resist. I was recently surprised to find that a computer algorithm concluded that I write like Dan Brown, which is funny because I didn’t think Dan Brown could actually write. Check out your own style – http://iwl.me/ Oh, and I love impractical shoes and funky hats.

  1. Well, well, well… Will never purchase a thing from the Stoufville Market again and will spread the word re: the animal cruelty going on there! Actually, I can’t remember when I was there last time… Have posted your informative story on my Fb page and am looking forward to seeing what kind of a response you get from the local paper there Heather… Maybe I should be paying more photography visits there too… Hmmm…

  2. Hi heather! I currently reside in Oshawa Ontario, today while driving down simcoe street my mom and I noticed a new place called k9 natural they sell homemade dog treats and take out for dogs. Today’s special was horse meat with carrots. I found this very disturbing as I own many horses my self. I do not like the consumption of meat, in not against it but I will not tolerate the consumption of horsemeat! I was just wondering if you knew of someone or a place I could contact to take care of this and possibly shut it down! To me that’s like feeding a dog to my horse… They would by go for that as I am not going for this! Thanks for reading!

  3. Yes exactly! From owning a racehorse I know exactly what there given and I don’t think if it’s good for humans to have it is definitely not good for our dogs!

  4. I am in complete shock and totally unaware this trade existed. First Japan with their slaughter of dolphins, and now finding out about horses. Sick and awful. But the worst was when I clicked on the 2nd point in the poll, unaware and shocked this was going on, my computer automatically clicked on a different point so this poll has somehow been rigged.

  5. Hi Heather,

Just stumbled across your web searching for activist in the area. I am wondering if there is a way to contact you. I am seeking any information on activism in this area.
    Thank you.

  6. Dear Heather – I am in awe of your efforts. Would like to offer support in some way. I do not have a blog and am not on Facebook, so have registered for your updates below. Thanks so much for your work. Donna

  7. Hi Heather:

Virginia Hastings is trying to raise funds to make a film about Alberta’s Wild Horse population and bring to light their precarious hold on life. I was wondering if you would like to share these links to her Facebook page and to the Indiegogo donation page. There is a long way to go and very little time left to donate so every little bit helps.

    Thanks very much

  8. In Defense of Animals (IDA) speaks out for Limba again!

““An elephant has no place in a Christmas-themed event,” said Nicole Meyer, Director of IDA’s Elephant Protection Campaign. “Nothing is further from the holiday spirit for children than to witness an intelligent and sensitive animal, like Limba, reduced to a joyless spectacle for a few minutes of so-called entertainment.”

Elephants are wild animals, and handlers—including Limba’s—control them through dominance using bullhooks, which are steel-tipped weapons similar to a fireplace poker used to strike, stab, prod, and intimidate elephants into obedience. Since 1990, at least 16 human deaths and more than 125 injuries in the U.S. and Canada have been attributed to elephants. Limba was responsible for one of those known injuries.”

Complaints can be made to the Ontario SPCA: “To report animal cruelty, please submit the complaint directly to our Investigations Department at cruelty@ospca.on.ca or 905-898-7122 ext. 327.”

  9. Dear Ms. Clemenceau,

I am weeks away from publishing a book about the thoroughbred and racing industry and would like your permission to use your report “Spontaneous Combustion – A Brief History of the Grassroots Anti-Horse Slaughter Movement” in it’s entirety. It is a perfect fit for the Slaughter chapter. Please contact me at the email address below so we can discuss this. Thank you for your time.

  10. Hello there Heather. Ate the horse on the
“Horse slaughter page adoptable or for sale. I saw a few I’m interested in. Would you please let me kno what I would need to do.
Thank YOU so very much. Would you let me kno one way or the other.
    Hav a great day.

    • Hi Sarah, thanks very much! I use Poser mostly – for people and animals. Periodically I use Bryce for landscapes, Photoshop, and a program called Universe, to create starfields and space backgrounds.
